Day 1

Decarbonisation Webinar

15 Nov 2021

Decarbonisation Webinar

Day 1 | 15 Nov 2021
Online Webinar via GoToWebinar

Event speakers

Decarbonisation will be the metric that defines our generation and will dominate political and industrial discourse over the next 30 years. The warnings laid out by the IPPC related to our current climate trajectory are stark. The challenge in front of us is illustrated in the CAT tracker opposite. Even optimistic targets have us at 2 degrees of warming. CoP 26 running the week before our event should not only shine a spotlight on the issue but hopefully agree some binding actions on decarbonisation.

Rightly so decarbonisation is Chapter 1 in The Little Green Book of Concrete and its Day 1 Session 1 in PRECAST Week.

Achieving carbon neutrality is an urgent challenge, but also a promising opportunity to build a better future for the next generation. The precast concrete sector is cutting CO¬2 emissions, especially where the life cycle emissions of structures can be reduced through the intelligent use of concrete. This session will explore the strategies and innovations currently emerging in the sector to bring us closer to Net Zero carbon emissions.

Adaptation to Climate Change Webinar

16 Nov 2021

Adaptation to Climate Change Webinar

Day 2 | 16 Nov 2021

Event speakers

If the summer of 2021 were to be summed up by a single phrase it would be the mantra “We must adapt to a ‘New Normal’”. Understandably, first thoughts might centre on our recovery from the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, the summer also saw a series of extreme weather events, forest fires in Greece, flooding in Germany and other climatic stresses around the world. With the predictions of global temperate rise and increased frequency of extreme weather events, we must also recognise this as our ‘New Normal’.

If we are to adapt to our changing climate, the precast concrete sector will have an important roll to play. Precast manufacturers produce a wide range of products designed to either reduce the risk or flooding or alleviate its affects. Precast concrete can also utilize thermal mass to provide protection against overheating and its noncombustible nature increases building resilience to fire.

Day 2 of PRECAST week will highlight Chapter 4 of the Little Green Book of Concrete on ‘Adaptation to Climate Change’. This session will focus on case studies from the precast sector which show some of the products available to increase the resilience of the built environment.

Day 3

Precast Concrete in the Future Webinar

17 Nov 2021

Precast Concrete in the Future Webinar

Day 3 | 17 Nov 2021
Online Webinar via GoToWebinar

Event speakers

Precast concrete is rapidly becoming one of the dominant ways to build the modern world. By coupling the excellent properties of concrete as material with an industrialised manufacturing environment, precast is the perfect choice for a fast and efficient offsite solution in construction. It is this factory-controlled environment that allows for sustainable innovation and the low carbon concrete products of the future.

The buildings of the future will incorporate eco-design processes enabled by building information modelling (BIM), optimised to deliver the most carbon efficient sustainable structure. Many architects and designers are already focusing heavily on designing out carbon and many innovations are already available on the market.

Day 3 of PRECAST week will examine aspects of Chapter 8 of the Little Green Book of Concrete on ‘Precast Concrete in the Future’. In this session we will look at one particular sector, facades, and hear from designers and manufacturers on what low carbon innovations are available now and will in available in the future.

Day 4

Achieving Green Building with Precast Webinar

18 Nov 2021

Achieving Green Building with Precast Webinar

Day 4 | 18 Nov 2021
Online Webinar via GoToWebinar

Event speakers

Today, green building design deals with aspects that go beyond the technical properties of a building and considers its long-term impacts on society and the environment. Precast concrete can play a major role in green construction, through creating more energy efficient, low-emission buildings.

There are numerous different routes to achieving green building with precast, from resource efficiency and responsible sourcing through to early design involvement to make the most of precast concretes intrinsic properties, such as thermal mass.

Industry press coverage of green building often wrongly focuses on timber construction when similar or better results can be achieved through the use of precast concrete with the added benefit of excellent fire performance.

Day 4 of PRECAST week centres on Chapter 5 of the Little Green Book of Concrete, ‘Achieving Green Building with Precast’. This webinar will provide some examples of the different options and levers open to designers and specifiers when looking to build sustainably with concrete.

Day 5

Regional Circular Economy Webinar

19 Nov 2021

Regional Circular Economy Webinar

Day 5 | 19 Nov 2021
Online Webinar via GoToWebinar

Event speakers

The current paradigm of a linear economic model (make-use-dispose) is coming to an end and in its place the construction sector is moving to a circular economy model (reduce-reuse-recycle). A prime example of this shift can be found in London where the New London Plan requires that a Circular Economy Statement be submitted to support development proposals.

Alongside decarbonisation, circular economy principles will define the construction sectors approach to building over the coming decades. Precast concrete elements feature high up in the circular economy hierarchy being durable and adaptable increasing the life of buildings and allowing retrofit. Concrete also can be designed for re-use or recycled as aggregate at end of life.

PRECAST week 2021 will be brought to a close with Chapter 2 of the Little Green Book of Concrete on ‘Regional Circular Economy’. This session features experts in the field who will examine the recent developments in the transition to a circular, zero avoidable waste economy.
